50 Years of the PM1 Paper Machine

We celebrated 50 years of operation of the paper machine PM1, which has been the core of production and a key pillar of the company’s development for half a century. The anniversary was not only a reflection on the past, but above all a confirmation of our direction for the future – towards development, innovation, and sustainability. The event brought together business partners, employees, and guests, and highlighted the company’s story, which is built on knowledge, investment, and adaptability.

From Technological Breakthrough to Modern Production

The paper machine, first launched in 1976, was the most modern in the region at the time. Today, after decades of continuous modernisation, it is a technologically advanced production unit that meets the highest industry standards.

In recent decades, the company has implemented several key upgrades – from increasing production speed to modernising cutting and packaging lines, introducing a biological treatment plant, and improving energy efficiency. In total, we have invested 60 million euros in development and modernisation over the past 30 years, thereby maintaining competitiveness and production stability.

“We are not just celebrating the anniversary of the machine, but also showing respect to the people who brought it to life – with their knowledge, experience, and work. It is because of them that we can speak of 50 years of continuous development and look forward with a clear goal,” emphasised Andraž Stegu, managing director.

“Our focus remains clear: away from competing in quantities and firmly anchored in segments with higher added value – from graphic and packaging to specialty papers. We are especially proud of the paper for instructions in the pharmaceutical industry, where standards are extremely high,” added commercial director Boštjan Robida.

People as the Foundation of the Story

The central message of the event was clear: technology alone is not enough; people are the key. Therefore, a special part of the programme was dedicated to employees with more than 40 years of service exclusively at the Goričane Paper Mill, who have shaped the company’s development with their knowledge and dedication. In their honour, we planted trees marked with their names, symbolising growth, perseverance, and the heritage of knowledge passed on to new generations.

At the event, we presented a presentation film titled Made in Goričane and the book 50 Years of the Paper Machine in Goričane.

Fifty years of operation is not only an important milestone, but above all a starting point for a future in which development, innovation and partnership remain key.
