SuperBark Consortium in Ljubljana
SuperBark explores components in softwood bark to develop new bio-based adhesives and coatings for a range of industrial applications. The four-year project (September 2023-August 2027) will improve the sustainability, health and safety profiles of adhesive and coating products compared to fossil-based solutions.
SuperBark aims to develop safe, sustainable, and high-performance adhesives and coatings from industrial softwood bark – pine and spruce – which is a major side stream from the forest industry. These will replace formaldehyde-based resins and other harmful fossil-based substances used in conventional adhesives and coatings in industries such as furniture, construction, transport, and packaging. Additional information can be found on official webside of the project https://superbark.eu/.
Consortium met for its fourth meeting hosted by ICP Pulp and Paper in Ljubljana, Slovenia between 4th and 5th of March 2025. The consortium toured ICP’s Pulp and Paper Research and Testing facilities, which specialise in the development of innovative biomaterials and their end products, including the testing of new advanced barrier coatings for paper. Members of consortium meeting also visited paper mill Goričane and experianced how speciality papers are made which are also used for barrier coating testing in the project.
